Against a backdrop of dwindling fossil fuel reserves and climate change concerns, Daniel Nocera of MIT wrote a Fall 2006 Daedalus article On the Future of Global Energy reporting in 2002 the world "burned energy at a rate of 13.3 TW…" (terawatts) with a projection that "if 9 billion people adopt the current standard of living for a US resident... the world would need an astronomical 102 TW of energy in 2050."
The challenge is to provide this energy in a cost effective and environmentally benign manner. The Dirigo (deer-uh-go, meaning "I Lead") Energy Institute, or DEI, is a research and development nonprofit corporation started to respond to this challenge.
In that DEI restricts its energy related R&D activities to sources in the public domain, its motto is "Power without Borders."
DEI was initially incorporated in 1992. A power pyramid was adopted as its symbol with R&D efforts concentrating on the sun, the atom, and the earth. DEI was unable to herald its programs in sufficient depth and detail to attract a following so it was dissolved. This new version will be rising from the ashes of the old, so a Phoenix is shown above the original power pyramid with the combination of the two serving as the new symbol of DEI.
